The Dubliners 50th Anniversary

2012 is a major landmark year for The Dubliners. It marks the 50^th Anniversary of the founding of the band in O’Donoghues Pub on Merrion Row in Dublin’s fair city…

That day in 1962 when Barney McKenna, Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly & Ciaran Bourke finally decided to “give it a go” as a real band rather than just play in pubs for “porter and balls of malt” and invited young fiddle player John Sheahan and guitarist Bob Lynch to join their ranks has to be seen as one of the best accidents ever to happen in the world of music.

After spending their first few months as the Ronnie Drew Ballad Group, and even one show advertised as The Ronnie Drew Ballet Group, the lads decided to call themselves after the James Joyce book Luke was reading at the time….Dubliners.  It was as simple as that. The Dubliners were born.

Since then the band have entertained, sang, thrilled, amazed, travelled, drank, slept, travelled some more, had another drink…. or three , recorded some great songs & amazing albums, Whiskey In The Jar, Dirty Old Town, The Irish Rover… played with just about everyone… U2, Rory Gallagher, Christy Moore, Billy Connolly, Imelda May, Damien Dempsey, Glen Hansard, The Pogues, had a drink with just about everyone and travelled even more…they have endured tragedies….first Bob Lynch, then Luke Kelly…and Ciaran Bourke & Ronnie Drew all passed on. Jim McCann’s health problems meant he had to retire but over the years Barney & John have played on. The Dubliners always go on. The music has to go on…. Sean Cannon joined them over 30 years ago…. Eamonn Campbell more than 25 years ago….Paddy Reilly stepped in for 10 years or so before retiring  and now “new boy” Patsy Watchorn. More travelling…. more airports…. more concerts…. As Barney said recently “It’s too late to stop now……”  He’s right. It is.

They travel. They turn up. They play. That’s just what they to. That’s what they have always done. The Dubliners play. And boy can they play.

SWAN LAKE

The Moscow Ballet delighted audiences in Dublin, Drogheda, Cork & Limerick last October with their production of ‘The Nutcracker’.   This year they will perform Tchaikovsky’s first ballet ‘Swan Lake’, an all time favourite with ballet lovers, it tells the story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette.

While hunting Prince Siegfried sees a magnificent swan, as he takes aim the swan turns into a beautiful  woman, this is Princess Odette, the victim of an evil sorcerers spell, she spends her daylight hours as a swan, swimming in a lake of tears, by night she becomes a woman again. The spell will be broken only if a virgin prince swears eternal love to her.

‘Swan Lake’ is their story and only they can adequately  tell the whole story to you, so book your tickets now and prepare to be enthralled.

Erth's Petting Zoo

Dinosaur Petting Zoo tells the story of the prehistoric creatures that roamed the great southern lands of Australia, more than 65 million years.  The scene is set by Erth’s Artistic Director and Dinosaur Whisperer Scott Wright, who with able assistants introduce the audience to a host of very life-like dinosaurs ranging in size and ferocity!  The kids are gathered tight around the stage and sit side by side on hay bales as Scott tells them all about sub-temperate rainforests and the environment these amazing creatures would have inhabited. Of course, all animals thrive in their natural environment which is certainly not a theatre! To the sound of rumbling thunder, Scott leads the audience in a chant of ‘Rain, Rain Rain’, until a magical, strange jungle starts to grow rapidly in front their eyes.

As the mist clears, Scott explains all about the mysterious plants and trees to the audience but it’s not the vegetation the kids have come to see…

“Does anyone want to see some Dinosaurs?”

From here on the kids get up close and personal with the baby dryosaurs, curious Leyallanasaurs, unpredictable Tyrannosaur, the enormous Meganuera dragonfly and enormous Titanosaur!

The audience gets to pet the Dinosaurs, learn how to feed them and care for them when they get sick and discover how they became extinct.  It’s a magical journey that for 60 minutes keeps kids and adults alike captivated.  Ireland has never seen anything quite like it!
