Annual Show will take place on the 2nd and 3rdof June, 2012 in the TLT at 7pm each evening and all classes will take part in this show. For all our new students the end of year show is a huge production featuring all the Kidkast students from Drogheda and Collon. Each class performs a piece in the show and all classes have been working really hard preparing, learning and practising over the last number of weeks. It is a showcase of the talent of the students and is a fun experience while teaching the students the workings of a “professional show”. This year’s show is called, “POPTASTIC” and is based on the musical by Limelight Productions UK and we perform this by kind permission of Mr Andrew Bailey.

Promoted by Johnston’s Folk Music Festival Committee.

Born, bred and based in County Down, Ireland, we have been singing and playing music for as long as we can remember.

We grew up on a small farm in the townland of Ryan, near the village of Mayobridge, a few miles from the town of Newry. Our parents, Mick and Bridie, both came from families of singers, musicians and storytellers and encouraged a love of Irish culture and tradition in their seven children.

Our house on the Ryan Road was a “ceili house” – a focal point – and neighbours from nearby farms as well as musical wanderers from much further afield often gathered around our fireside for long winter evenings of song, music, “craic” and merriment.

Our repertoire largely consists of our own compositions, together with some of our favourites from the bottomless well of the Irish song and music tradition.

We often perform and record as solo artists, but thirty five years on the road have not dulled our appetite for getting together for tours, festivals and occasional trips to the recording studio – in fact, quite the reverse! – and we have every intention of carrying on carrying on!

NEW DATE 21ST SEPTEMBER 2012.

POSTPONED DUE TO ILLNESS, PLEASE CONTACT BOX OFFICE ON 041 9878560 FOR MORE DETAILS.

When the crowd ripped up the seats in Dublin’s Carlton Cinema in 1956 in what was the first Rock ‘n’ Roll riot in Europe, in the audience was Dickie Rock – a young lad from Cabra who would go on to become a legend in his own lifetime.

Dickie Rock’s early years followed a somewhat familiar pattern for ambitious young entrants into the magical world of show business: He became a member of the choir in Cabra West, Dublin where he grew up, and held day jobs as a jeweller’s assistant and an apprentice welder. By night he took part in various charity shows throughout the city as a singer in an amateur variety group called The Casino Players before eventually teaming up with The Melacords, a popular local semi-professional group.

In 1963 Dickie went professional with The Miami Showband and continued on to become one of Ireland’s most successful recording artists ever with a run of 25 hits from 1963 to 1983. Dickie represented Ireland in the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest with a Roland Soper song ‘Come Back to Stay’. After a magnificent performance and a respectable fourth place, the song remains a firm favourite with his fans almost 44 years later. Even after all this time, the people’s favourite son cannot leave the stage without performing ‘Come Back to Stay’ and all his number one singles including ‘There’s Always Me’ (1963), ‘I’m Yours’ (1964), ‘From the Candy Store on the Corner’ (1964), ‘Every Step of the Way’ (1965), ‘Wishing it was You’ (1965), ‘Simon Says’ (1968) and so many more. His most recent album, ‘Dickie Rock Sings Contemporary Irish Classic Hits’ was released to great acclaim in September 2007 and still receives considerable airplay from top Irish DJs.

Dickie’s autobiography was a best seller on its release two years ago and is still selling steadily. It looks like it will sell its 20.000 print run out. His last album ‘Dickie Rock Sings Contemporary Irish Classic Hits’ is still very popular with radio stations – with his rendition of Van Morrison’s ‘Moondance’ being especially in demand.

Dickie plays the TLT on 19th May 2012 @ 8pm.

2012 is a major landmark year for The Dubliners. It marks the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the band in O’Donoghues Pub on Merrion Row in Dublin’s fair city…

That day in 1962 when Barney McKenna, Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly & Ciaran Bourke finally decided to “give it a go” as a real band rather than just play in pubs for “porter and balls of malt” and invited young fiddle player John Sheahan and guitarist Bob Lynch to join their ranks has to be seen as one of the best accidents ever to happen in the world of music.

After spending their first few months as the Ronnie Drew Ballad Group, and even one show advertised as The Ronnie Drew Ballet Group, the lads decided to call themselves after the James Joyce book Luke was reading at the time….Dubliners. It was as simple as that. The Dubliners were born.

Since then the band have entertained, sang, thrilled, amazed, travelled, drank, slept, travelled some more, had another drink…. or three , recorded some great songs & amazing albums, Whiskey In The Jar, Dirty Old Town, The Irish Rover… played with just about everyone… U2, Rory Gallagher, Christy Moore, Billy Connolly, Imelda May, Damien Dempsey, Glen Hansard, The Pogues, had a drink with just about everyone and travelled even more…they have endured tragedies….first Bob Lynch, then Luke Kelly…and Ciaran Bourke & Ronnie Drew all passed on. Jim McCann’s health problems meant he had to retire but over the years Barney & John have played on. The Dubliners always go on. The music has to go on…. Sean Cannon joined them over 30 years ago…. Eamonn Campbell more than 25 years ago….Paddy Reilly stepped in for 10 years or so before retiring and now “new boy” Patsy Watchorn. More travelling…. more airports…. more concerts…. As Barney said recently “It’s too late to stop now……” He’s right. It is.

They travel. They turn up. They play. That’s just what they to. That’s what they have always done. The Dubliners play. And boy can they play.

Ladies and Gentlemen Raise a Glass to…………..The Dubliners.
